The most coherent thing about the current argument is its convenience. Attributing the degradation of online life to the generation that grew up inside algorithmic systems requires ignoring the sequence: the systems came first, the users adapted, and the adaptation is now evidence of moral failure. What is being called a generational pathology is more precisely described as the expected behavior of people inside an optimized environment — one built by adults, monetized by institutions, and then handed to young people as their social and professional infrastructure.
