In brief
One flooring planner is free to use, with one exception, and the exception is the Claude API. Its builder says the planner, the cut list, the material order and the laying sequence cost nothing, and that the only thing that will be metered is the assistant when it launches, because each message costs compute. When builders list their stacks, the Claude API gets a line between the backend and the payments tool and is named for its job: coach, planner, grader.

How people talked about Claude API
In the posts, cost went from a design problem the week before to a receipt this week. The week before, one builder of an AI marketing tool said the flow worked but the API cost shot up quickly, and asked how others keep it down without degrading the output. Asked that way, cost is something the builder can engineer. This week one user says the API charged them a very large sum within a few hours, and that they bought another Max plan and gave the API a huge no. For that user the meter was something to escape rather than engineer.
People answer the meter by learning how it works. One reply explains the caching bill: on the Claude API the cache runs tools, then system, then messages, so a change at one level invalidates that level and the ones after it, and a request under the model's minimum just runs uncached with no error. The failure it describes is silent. Another user pointed to the documentation on prompt caching and on which time limit each request gets, along with Anthropic's engineering writing on reducing cost, which recommends avoiding tool calls that outlive the cache's time limit. Both read as help offered to someone trying to keep the bill down.
The key is the other thing people guard, and the talk about it treats it as cash. A commenter explaining how accounts get taken over says the likelier route is theft of a session or credential file from the owner's own PC, and that there is a huge market for stolen accounts, which sellers pool into proxy networks to resell API access cheaper. They sign off with "Better safe than sorry." A key that others can spend from is closer to cash than to a password. A reader who sees what looks like a key in someone's post tells the author it is their Anthropic API key, that it lets people use their account at their expense, and that they would delete it.
Tools built around the API treat it as an engine that can be swapped. A Windows coding agent offers to plug in a Claude API key or run local models through Ollama, and says it stores keys and secrets locally in the Windows Vault. The pitch is control: the user's key and the user's machine. A browser-based replacement for Claude Code lists OpenAI Codex, OpenAI and Anthropic API as supported. In both, the Claude API is a setting, one option beside others, and the harness is what the builder is selling.
Sometimes the work around the API lands on people who never asked for it. One user describes maintainers of free open-source tools, among them people who live-code music, being inundated with LLM pull requests to "slap the Claude API on it for no reason".
Which door to the API to take is a live question. Someone seeking a long-term Claude API provider for company R&D lists Azure, AWS Bedrock and Anthropic as the candidates. The choice of door also decides whose limits apply. One user explained that using Claude through a gateway like OpenRouter means the rate limits come from a pooled key, so the ceiling is mostly the gateway's, and that bringing your own provider key puts the limits against your own account.
Data terms are another place the API's rules show up. One commenter pasted Anthropic's terms, which say that by default inputs and outputs from its commercial products, the API among them, are not used to train its models unless the user reports feedback or otherwise allows it. That is the default, in Anthropic's own words. One user who had asked for zero data retention said they were told that custom compliance programs are designed for organizations that meet enterprise criteria, and asked another how they had achieved it. A default is a promise that can be quoted; an exception is something a customer has to ask for.
A builder of a tool that scores a draft against a teacher's marking profile asks whether the upload step is a dealbreaker. The question puts the upload step in front of the people who would use the tool before the tool is released.
Putting the API behind a product means choosing which of its burdens the customer carries. The builders who say what will be metered, whose key it is and what gets uploaded are making a promise their users can hold them to.

The communities the conversation about Claude API happened in, grouped by platform.
Posts about Claude API by community, 14–20 Sep 2026, as of 2 Oct 2026 04:00Z; in development. Each platform is drawn on its own scale. The word after each community is its type: who is there, not what it’s about (users are people who use one AI product; builders build with AI). A post counts once, in the community it was posted in.

Change compares this reading with the previous stored reading of the same subject, usually last week’s, and both endpoints stay visible with their dates. Each value carries its n; open it for its full conditions, coverage included. Stored weeks, above, cross eras, which marks a change in how weeks were captured: March era weeks were rebuilt from archives, with live capture from 7 Mar to 31 May, Archive backfill weeks were backfilled from archives (Reddit, Hacker News and arXiv only) and September era weeks were captured live from 16 Sep and filled in from archives.
