The Part Others Build Around

In this week's conversation Claude Code is less a tool people sit down and use than a part they build around.

In brief

One developer who built an orchestration tool on a shared agent protocol, and discloses that they maintain it, says Claude Code, Codex, Grok Build and DeepSeek can be swapped for one another in a running deployment: change the runtime, keep the role, the workspace, the permissions and the memory. The claim is a modest one, but it describes the week well. In this conversation Claude Code is less a tool people sit down and use than a part they build around, and the talk about it keeps turning to the machinery on either side of it.

How people talked about Claude Code

People wrap it, route around it and borrow its interface, and the examples are specific: a safety layer that sits in front of Claude Code, Codex and Gemini CLI and sends supported deletion commands to a recoverable trash instead of letting them run, and a proxy that lets Claude Code use Devin's free models as its backend. Each treats the product as a surface other software can stand on. That is what a harness is meant to be, and it makes the product's neighbors as much a subject of the talk as the product itself.

A surface that others stand on is also a surface where weaknesses travel. One user relayed a security firm's report of a flaw in how coding agents pin plugins by hash, where Git resolves a branch named like the hash and updates in malware, and noted that Claude Code and Codex had been patched while describing Copilot's response as "shrugging". The patch matters to Claude Code's users; the route of the flaw, through the coding agents that pin and update plugins, is the part worth carrying away.

Once a part is meant to be swapped, the next question is how several of them share a workspace. One user who installed an agent coordinator says the agents cooperate and improve on each other's work, but that Codex gave Claude Code a task and Claude Code answered, in effect, that Codex was not its boss, after which Codex complained, and the user settled it with a house rule to play nice, since cooperation is more efficient than conflict. Peers that each expect to give the orders need a convention before they can share a workspace.

It is also a reference point and a destination. A Spanish-language user asks whether using DeepSeek's own API requires a system like Anthropic's Claude Code, and what DeepSeek's equivalent is called, while another says they are switching from Cursor to Claude Code, paired with the Ghostty terminal. For one it is the yardstick for a rival's product, for the other the place to land after Cursor.

People who use its rivals give it credit: one who pays for both Claude and Codex says they get more use out of Claude Code at the moment, though they say it sucks that the usage applies in chat, and another loves Codex but is trying Claude Code because of its ecosystem. Preference and grievance sit in the same account of the user who pays for both.

Cost draws accounts of the product that point in opposite directions. One user, arguing over whether Claude Code is subsidized, calls the pricing arbitrary and says people are right to complain when an expensive product they pay for behaves inconsistently or is degraded, while another says their company has finished rolling Claude Code out enterprise-wide, that they have never heard it name a limit, and that their manager has told them to ignore costs for now. One account defends the right to complain about a bill; the other describes a bill they have been told to ignore.

People who work with it treat context as something to maintain: one asks whether others notice that it "gets dumber as sessions get longer", with notes it refers back to days or weeks later that may be out of date, and another advises asking Claude Code to clean up its existing memory files. That is housekeeping, and housekeeping is what a part needs more than a tool does.

Underneath this runs an effort to make a project's instructions portable: Claude Code reads AGENTS.md when no CLAUDE.md file is present, as one user noted, and another says that for them the portable part was the folder rather than the harness, with instructions kept on disk and read in place. Moves like these make the agent a guest in the project rather than its owner, which suits a part meant to be swapped.

After a system failure forced one user to reset a computer and reinstall Claude, they found nearly all of a Cowork project's conversations gone from every Claude app, missing from the data export they downloaded, and some Claude Code conversations gone too. By their account the reset kept their files, while the conversations held inside Claude were the part that did not come back. For a part meant to be swapped, that is the practical side of the week's talk: what a person keeps outside it, such as files and instructions, can follow them to the next runtime, and the history held inside it may stay behind.
