In brief
A Reddit post this week shared a headline saying OpenAI was "reportedly paying contractors to read ChatGPT chats." The headline touched a worry running through the conversation about OpenAI: who ends up holding what people type into the company's products, and what the company does with it.

How people talked about OpenAI
That worry has a wide surface, because ChatGPT is one of the names people reach for when they name AI apps and agents. A Bluesky post quoting a laptop's sales page listed it that way: "The AI apps and tools you use the most, like ChatGPT and Canva, run beautifully on MacBook Neo." The line names ChatGPT as one example and does not mention OpenAI. A Reddit commenter put it beside Claude, writing that "Most advanced agents out there will be Claude or ChatGPT." That is part of why a question about OpenAI's handling of chats can feel larger than one company's.
Commenters had different ways of living with that worry. One commenter treated it as a bargain, writing "OpenAi steals what you type into it" and then adding "Then don't use it." That is a complaint with its exit built in. Another commenter waved the worry off: anyone with "the kind of enemy that can get access to your 2024 ChatGPT logs from a deleted account" is, they said, "cooked anyway."
The dispute over a mathematics prize shows how the worry turns into a charge. One commenter started carefully, "We don't know that yet," and still arrived at suspicion: it "definitely looks like" the researchers left chat history switched on as training data, and if that let OpenAI publish first it was "hardly innocent." Caution and blame sat in the same breath. A Bluesky post skipped the caution: "OpenAI stole mathematicians' work by using their prompts to Codex." In both, the argument is less about who reached the answer than about whose material the model had been given.
The vocabulary of theft carried into a different complaint. A Bluesky post sharing a link said OpenAI and Microsoft "knew they were starting a 'doom loop' for the web," and quoted a line calling it the "largest theft of labor in human history." In these posts taking is something the company is said to do, whether what is taken is a chat, mathematicians' work or the labor behind the web.
The company also appeared as the one being got into. A French-language video on YouTube said researchers had entered several OpenAI employee accounts with Claude's help, and that OpenAI had since fixed the flaws. That is a hole found and closed. A Bluesky post reported that researchers escaped OpenAI Codex's sandbox "to run commands on host," and the report it carried ended in patches as well. These reports ask whether OpenAI can keep hold of what it holds, a different question from whether it should have it.
A different complaint widened the frame. A Bluesky post asked "How are the AI companies not held to account for the agent hacking?" and added "If this was a person, they would be in jail." The breach reports are about OpenAI being entered. This one is about agents entering others, and it puts OpenAI in the same dock as the other AI companies.
The suspicion reached what the company says as well as what it takes. One Bluesky post noted that OpenAI, Google DeepMind and Anthropic "all just called for slowing AI down" while one of them chose Nasdaq for its IPO "in the same breath," and summed it up as "Slower, richer." Here a call for caution is read as a business move. A Hacker News headline gave an OpenAI framework the same treatment, calling it "A Tactical Bid to Preempt Global AI Governance."
Against the grievances sat people who treated ChatGPT as the place where work gets done. One person learning 3D modelling for a game described ChatGPT offering to "install Blender in my workspace" and animate a 3D dog. The offer shows the hand-off from the inside: a tool that does the work where the work lives. Elsewhere a commenter asked "Why are you still using blender when you can do this in a second in chatgpt?"
The offer in that post stretches the week's custody question past what people type to what they are making. It would put a 3D dog waiting to be animated in the assistant's hands, with each frame checked and the result packaged as a file. For someone learning 3D modelling, the step-by-step help the same post describes leaves the work with the learner, and the offer to do the animating leaves it with ChatGPT.

Posts published 14–20 Sep 2026, as of 2 Oct 2026 04:00Z; in development. People count distinct platform identities and are never added across platforms. Share is OpenAI’s posts over all posts AIDRAN captured on that platform in the window. Reddit’s posts include its comments. A normal share is openAI's share of each platform's posts in the 15 earlier stored weeks of the same era (2026-W23, 2026-W24, 2026-W25, 2026-W26, 2026-W27, 2026-W28, 2026-W29, 2026-W30, 2026-W31, 2026-W32, 2026-W33, 2026-W34, 2026-W35, 2026-W36, 2026-W37), per platform. OpenAI’s people and share of platform posts, W01–W40, 40 stored weeks. Each chart is on its own scale from all of them. All 40 are in development; the open dot is this reading.
