In brief
One user's warning began with a Windows update that broke Claude's local execution and document pipeline, after which Claude suggested a reinstall. A reinstall is where the question of what the app leaves behind starts to matter. The post said the Claude desktop app's data is not disposable, because removing the app is different from removing the folders it leaves behind, one of which holds, for every session, the full conversation transcript: every message, tool call and tool result. The advice is practical and specific, and it names what the app has quietly accumulated on the person's machine.

How people talked about Claude app
That attitude runs through the week. People keep real work in the Claude app, and what they ask about is where it lives. One user has Claude record each good conversation as a comprehensive summary in a markdown file, then downloads it into an Obsidian vault for later reading, so the record sits outside the app. To this user, the app's own history is something to carry out. Another, explaining that Code sessions are files on a Mac filed per account and organization, said that switching accounts empties the sidebar while the transcripts stay put, and wrote a tool that moves the sidebar records to the account in use. Both have decided for themselves where the history should live.
Where the work lives is tied to which account holds it. One user running separate Mac user accounts with fast user switching, Claude desktop logged in on each to a different Claude account, asked whether each of them could use cowork as if on separate computers; the confusion began, they said, when their wife asked Claude questions on their account. That is a question about the account and not the model. Another, a Claude Pro subscriber who paid through the iPhone app, was stuck in a login loop with Apple's Hide My Email that made it impossible to contact Anthropic support, while their full chat history sat in the phone app. A login problem is also a history problem when the history lives behind the login.
The app also has to stay up. One user said Claude desktop had been driving them mad for over a month: disabling updates does not stop the forced one, killing node and python processes only sometimes lets the app restart, and it crashes even with long-running tasks active, then forces a reboot. For this user the cost lands on the long-running tasks Claude was monitoring. Another put it more bluntly: "The claude desktop app is garbage and resource hog, imo," they wrote, and recommended a Claude Code setup with a separate config folder for each login instead. The first stays and suffers, and the second routes around the app to the terminal.
Limits are the other clock. One user, holding a notice that their weekly Claude Code limit was temporarily boosted through September 13, was working out when the boost would end. A limit that moves is one people watch. Another, who had paid for the Pro plan less than a month earlier, felt that their credits were consumed twice as fast whenever such a notice arrived. What a limit takes away is room to work, and these users keep track of that room themselves.
The same decision shows up in how people plan. One user does the planning on the Claude web app with Opus or ideally Fable, has Claude write the plan as a markdown document at the end, and feeds that into Claude Code, which they find works better. The plan is the app's product and the next tool's input. A student described the opposite habit: a Claude Project for each class, with instructions tuned over the quarter so that explanations match their professor's notation and every answer gets a sanity check. There the written instructions stay in the app and steer what it says. Each has chosen what the app keeps and what it hands on.
Keeping work in the app also means widening what the app can reach. One user asked what was in a Garmin firmware update and got "I can't fetch that", since Claude's built-in web fetch honours robots.txt even when a person asks for one specific page; they set up a self-hosted Playwright MCP server so Claude had a real browser, and said it nearly let their whole Wi-Fi drive it. The fix extends the app, and its cost came back as a security risk. Another noted that Claude does not make images or video by itself, but a skill that hands it an API key can cover both. In both, the app is given something it did not come with, a real browser in one and an API key in the other.
One user said that a skill added as a plugin in the Claude.ai settings works great in shorter sessions, but that in longer ones you have to keep reminding Claude of it. For that user, the work includes the instruction itself: installing the skill did not hand its custody to the app, and in a long session the person still has to hold it and say it again.
