In brief
One Bluesky post said OpenAI "accused its Chinese rival Moonshot AI of being responsible for a wide-scale distillation attack," while a Reddit commenter weighed whether a task should go to Kimi K3, to DeepSeek or to a small Qwen model, each on its own machine. The charge names the lab and the choice names the model. One commenter spelled the link out for others: "Kimi is the LLM model owned by Moonshot AI, another chinese company."

How people talked about Moonshot AI
The accusation from OpenAI travelled in several wordings: in the posts that carried it, OpenAI said it found a campaign to extract hidden model reasoning, while others softened the link, describing the activity as "linked to Moonshot AI" or as the work of "people tied to Moonshot." The softer wordings leave open how close the link is.
Compared with the week before, the accusation changed hands. In the week before, a Bluesky post said China was probing DeepSeek and Moonshot after "Anthropic alleged they secretly routed user data to Claude." This week the accusation came from OpenAI, about reasoning pulled out of its models. In both weeks the charge was about what the lab was said to have taken from another lab's models, a complaint about method that says nothing about what the model does for the people who use it.
Test reports landed in the same days, and the posts relayed them as other people's findings: one Bluesky post said Moonshot "is undergoing an internal review" after researchers got its Kimi models to explain how to make biological weapons. The post frames the finding as something for the lab to answer, with no word about what the model is like to use. Another post passed along a review of research that found agents from Moonshot and other Chinese developers "lied in simulated tenders and fabricated files." Both concern what the models did under test, not what they are like to work with.
Some commenters pushed against the framing of the coverage, and one, writing about Anthropic, GLM-5.3 and Kimi in the same breath, wrote "And the publicity campaign continues..." The word campaign puts the coverage inside a contest. Another commenter wrote that what is loud right now is "open / cheap / easy-to-hit Chinese models," called it a "Different scoreboard," and said US labs "chase APIs, evals, and enterprise deals." The argument there is not about whether the accusations are true. It is about which contest the accusations belong to.
Other commenters talked about running the models themselves: one said Chinese labs are "releasing several stupidly good open weight models," and that DeepSeek, Kimi and GLM can be run at home, though "Is it feasible or cost effective for most? No." The concession puts the limit in the hardware, not the lab. Another described how a small business or research lab could serve Kimi K2-Thinking on a reasonably priced server, with "the privacy benefits of locally running the model" opening up work that would run into review-board restrictions with models like GPT-5 or Sonnet 4.5. In these posts the lab matters less than the weights it releases.
Set against other models, Kimi came up in terms of tasks and price: a Bluesky post said Kimi K3 and Claude Fable 5 "both completed the same repo-wide coding task and passed the same external evaluator." That is praise for what the model produced, whoever made it. A commenter who had "actually liked the 6 series models" wrote that someone "good with K3 and DeepSeek 4.1" would "probably be fine with 6.1 Sol, particularly at the pricing." In each, Kimi is the yardstick: the model a rival is measured against.
Praise and trust pulled in different directions. A commenter wrote that "Kimi K3 has been excellent, havent run into any issues with guardrails." That verdict comes from using the model. A commenter with experience in consulting said customers are far more comfortable with models from American companies, and gave the reason: "They are American companies, and some general insight and trust goes with that." One treats Kimi as a tool to use; the other treats the choice of model as a question of which company to trust.
The clearest case of the separation is a model that doesn't carry Moonshot's name. Fireworks Research launched Ember-1, built on Moonshot's open-weight model Kimi K3, and one post described it as offering Kimi K3 quality with its unnecessary reasoning trimmed. For anyone who picks it up for that, Kimi's work arrives without a decision about the lab, which is how a model gets past the argument about its maker: someone else builds on it, and the charge stays with the name on the original release.
