In brief
One person described Google's search page in a single line: "Actually google replaced google, I just search as usual and click AI mode." The line treats AI Mode as the ordinary way into search rather than an add-on. Someone else said Google had changed the "I'm feeling lucky" button to generate a prompt for the AI Mode button, and that they saw no more search button on the main page. Both describe a Google main page that sends them into AI Mode.

How people talked about AI Mode
Google's own page keeps pushing the same way: some queries route into AI Mode chat, an AI Mode button sits on the homepage, and a test has AI Overviews expanding into full AI Mode-style answers by default. One person complained that Google squeezed AI Mode in at the leftmost side, which makes clicking shopping by mistake likelier. That is a complaint about real estate rather than answers. Someone else described an extension that can remove AI Overviews, hide the Gemini app and hide the AI Mode tab.
AI Mode also works as a side door for people leaving Gemini's own chat. One person named usage limits as the reason they were moving from Gemini to AI Mode and several rivals; another called Gemini Pro too condescending and said they can use Google search AI mode in a private tab instead. People treat it as the free tool to reach for when Gemini's chat frustrates them. One commenter reads that drift as strategy: Google's goal, they wrote, is "to replace Google search with the free AI mode, so Google can keep printing money."
Shopping is where AI Mode shifts from a place to ask to a place to buy. Google is bringing checkout into AI Mode and Gemini for eligible Shopify merchants in the US and testing a Buy button for Flipkart products in India. People writing about the tests framed them as recommendation turning into transaction; one wrote, "AI isn’t just recommending anymore. It’s starting to checkout." For the sellers the same shift looks different. Another post worried that marketplaces "may keep the order while losing control of the customer journey."
Ads are the other half of the arrangement. Google is testing ads inside AI Mode, among them healthcare ads for US queries and ad formats with sitelinks. The stakes are plain in what someone sorting through lost search clicks said: research sessions moved into ChatGPT and AI Mode, where "the brand either gets named in that answer or it does not." Once ads sit in the answer, being named stops meaning one thing. One person described the ads as text links formatted like ordinary citations, tagged "Sponsored" underneath the response, and warned that a citation in an AI Mode answer "no longer tells you whether it was earned or bought."
Underneath the shopping sits the older argument about the click. A field study passed around in posts found that AI Mode alone reduced click-through and hurt trust and user experience, and that removing AI Overviews and AI Mode together increased publisher clicks. Findings like that turn the argument from taste into traffic. Google's payments to publishers enter the same argument: posts describe a pilot that pays publishers according to how much their content feeds AI Overviews, AI Mode and Gemini, and one reported that some participants say the payouts amount to very little next to their advertising revenue.
The click and checkout argument depends on people believing the answer, and on that they are split. One person called AI Mode's summaries "borderline unusable," citing hallucinations and self-contradiction between messages; someone else, arguing about Copilot, called AI Mode "very good overall" and set it apart from the plain AI Overview. A search that ends in an answer works only for the person who trusts that answer, so each reader's verdict on its accuracy is a verdict on the whole arrangement. That the argument happens at all says AI Mode has become something people have to take a position on.
What runs underneath is an open question. One post said Google changed the default model behind AI Mode to Gemini 3.5 Flash, and argued that a model change can alter which sources are retrieved, selected and ultimately seen. Someone running GLM 5.3 Flash said AI Mode, which they said uses Gemini 4, replied as if it were GLM 5.3, and wondered whether Gemini 4 was distilled from it or just finetuned. If that first post is right, swapping the model swaps the editor of what people see.
AI Mode has also become a point of comparison. Someone using Siri since its beta launch wrote that "the experience reminds me of Google AI Mode." For that person AI Mode is the yardstick for a different product. Bing was reported to be testing the same name for Copilot Search, which one observer read as a sign that AI Mode is "becoming a category, not just a Google feature." Once a rival borrows the name, the question stops being whether searches should end in an answer and becomes who is paid when they do.
