In brief
One user writes that they "only just got my llama parameters dialled in perfectly so I can finally start using Qwen3.8". Here llama is a program with settings, and Qwen is what it runs. Someone else starts a model on their laptop with a command ChatGPT gave them, which begins with llama serve. Across these posts Llama names the software that runs a model, and the model it carries belongs to someone else.

How people talked about Llama
The program is judged on speed, and the judgments run against it. A user working on a Q8-equivalent for vllm says "llama seems to royally suck for speed". That is a verdict from someone with another engine to build for. A user recommending exllamav3 reports prompt processing far above "the llama build I was running it with". Both are measuring the program against its rivals, and neither says anything about a Meta model.
Yet the program keeps getting chosen, and the reasons are about control. One reply asks whether an appliance should host a model or connect to one, and says to host it "just bundle llama.cpp with your appliance". It adds that the server "comes built-in with a web client". That is the case for llama as something that can ship inside a product. Another user calls LM Studio good but says it offers "not much setting with the model compared to llama ccp for the engine". Control over the machinery is a different virtue from speed, and it is the one these users name.
A dispute over what belongs on a Reddit forum shows how loose the name is. One commenter, objecting to what they call gatekeeping, says "We ain't talking about Llama either". That is an admission that the name doesn't set the subject. Another points to a rule that posts must be related to Llama "or the topic of LLMs" and says it "says nothing about HARDWARE, nothing about LOCAL". The rule itself is wider than the name on the door.
In some posts the model itself turns up where people want their data kept at home. A Bluesky post describes a meeting pipeline in which Faster-Whisper transcribes the recording and "a local Llama 3.3 pulls out decisions and action items", then asks "Why upload HR calls to a SaaS?" That is an argument about where data goes, made with a model rather than about one. Another post lists Ollama, which runs Llama 3 locally, among the tools for "truly sensitive work", on the grounds that "Your data never leaves your machine." Both choose the model for where it runs.
Elsewhere the model is a reserve. A routing SDK lists a Llama 3.3 70B endpoint last in its fallback list, after Claude and OpenAI models. That is where the router ends up when the others fail. A user who built a speech agent says they ran out of tokens on gpt-oss-120b, found that llama-3.1-8b-instant and llama-3.3-70b-versatile did not have enough tokens either, and asks where to find "unlimited free tokens". For them Llama is one of the models tried and found short of tokens. In both, Llama is a supply to draw on rather than a model anyone describes.
Small Llama models also serve as test subjects. A commenter replying to a research post says they ran "very similar research" on the Llama 1b model, and that "early layer injection massively out performed the later layer". That is Llama as the model a method gets tried on. A Bluesky post relaying an arXiv listing says an effect where models abandon correct answers when users push back differs between Qwen2.5-1.5B and Llama-3.2-1B. Here too it is one of the models on the bench, with Qwen beside it, not the program on anyone's desk.
When people do judge the model, they judge it on different jobs. One commenter, struck by how good Llama 3.1 8B's output seems against "a lot of newer small models", thinks "Meta's models have always been deceptively good". That is praise for plain output. A Bluesky post about a test that pressured language models with fake credentials and an invented citation says Llama 4 Maverick "caved" while Claude Opus 5.5 "never flipped once". That is a test of resistance, not of output. The two verdicts do not collide, because they measure different things.
Talk about Meta itself puts the name in the past. A commenter tracing where open weights came from says Llama "was almost certainly not planned to leak". A post about Meta's stock accuses its audience of saying for months that "Llama was bad". Both treat the name as something that happened. What keeps running on people's machines is the program, and the name goes where the running is.

Change compares this reading with the previous stored reading of the same subject, usually last week’s, and both endpoints stay visible with their dates. Each value carries its n; open it for its full conditions, coverage included. Stored weeks, above, cross eras, which marks a change in how weeks were captured: March era weeks were rebuilt from archives, with live capture from 7 Mar to 31 May, Archive backfill weeks were backfilled from archives (Reddit, Hacker News and arXiv only) and September era weeks were captured live from 16 Sep and filled in from archives.

Posts published 21–27 Sep 2026, as of 2 Oct 2026 04:00Z; in development. People count distinct platform identities and are never added across platforms. Share is Llama’s posts over all posts AIDRAN captured on that platform in the window. Reddit’s posts include its comments. A normal share is llama's share of each platform's posts in the 16 earlier stored weeks of the same era (2026-W23, 2026-W24, 2026-W25, 2026-W26, 2026-W27, 2026-W28, 2026-W29, 2026-W30, 2026-W31, 2026-W32, 2026-W33, 2026-W34, 2026-W35, 2026-W36, 2026-W37, 2026-W38), per platform. Distinct people who posted about each subject on each platform, 21–27 Sep 2026, as of 2 Oct 2026 04:00Z, from release 2026-W39’s summary table (published). Each strip is on its own scale and nothing is added across platforms: one person can post on several. arXiv and Exa carry articles, which have no authors, so they have no ranking by people.
