In brief
One subscriber on a cloud plan found that Kimi K3 "drains all week usage in less than an hour," so they run lighter models through the week and bring Kimi in near the end of the weekly limit, which was enough to fix real bugs in their app. For this commenter the model was something to ration rather than skip. Another commenter called it "way more unaffordable than Sol" while saying K3 is "still my favorite model." Kimi, the chatbot from Moonshot AI, was priced this week against different things, and which side of cheap it landed on depended on the comparison.

How people talked about Kimi
Set beside Anthropic's prices, some commenters found Kimi cheap. Someone who had been paying Anthropic for several subscriptions moved to one pay-per-token key and said Kimi "does a terrific job with many of my more simple tasks at a fraction of the price." The comparison there is with subscriptions, and the saving came from paying per token instead. A different commenter came at it from the other end, saying Sonnet in practice costs the same as near-Opus models in the Qwen and Kimi lines.
Beside DeepSeek, one commenter put Kimi on the costly side, saying DeepSeek's V4 is already "crazy cheap to run inference," and that "even Kimi might get its lunch eaten just on the fact that their inference is so expensive." In that comparison the yardstick is DeepSeek's cost to run, and Kimi comes up short by that commenter's account. Cheap there means cheap to serve, which is a different measure from what a subscriber pays.
Quota was a unit commenters counted Kimi in. One commenter's rule for heavy coding was to keep a frontier plan for the hard reasoning and push grunt work to a cheaper quota, with Kimi coding plans fine as that second lane if you can live with the limits and data tradeoffs. The commenter who saved Kimi for the end of the week treated it as the scarce resource, and this one treated it as the routine one. Counted in quota, what Kimi costs depends on the plan around it, which is a different question from what the model costs.
The jobs commenters gave Kimi were not all set by cost. One commenter said they put GLM ahead of Kimi K3 in their fallback stack and that Kimi "stays for creative stuff." That is a job, not a price. A different commenter had moved a recurring workflow from GPT to Kimi K3 when it was released and said "my results doubled," with the model building files and folders out of the reports it was fed. Both tie Kimi to the work it does for them: creative work for one, building out files and folders from reports for the other.
Open weights made who sets Kimi's price a live question. One commenter said anybody can host Kimi K3 and the license bars selling tokens cheaper than Moonshot, yet "nobody is offering a subscription with a quota even close to Anthropic's." A price comparison assumes the name on the bill is the model that answered, and once anyone can host Kimi, a discounted one invites the question of what is being served. A different commenter said a discount provider had been exposed as a wrapper that, when you ask for Kimi K3, serves "DeepSeek V4 Flash (a much cheaper model) without your consent."
The charge that Kimi quietly passed requests to Claude raised the same question from the other side, and it was argued as a question of what a user could see. One commenter wanted to see Moonshot's response, noting that Kimi always streams its reasoning and Claude does not, so a swap would be obvious. That puts the proof in what appears on screen. A reply asked for the reasoning traces of each to be posted, since to them it was "extremely obvious that sometimes Kimi, DeepSeek, etc talk exactly like Claude." Both bring up the reasoning traces, one as the reason a swap would show and the other as what to post before that claim is accepted.
The subscriber who saved Kimi for the end of a weekly limit ended their post with an aside: they had never used Opus 5, Fable, Astra or Sol, and wondered whether that left them in a good place to judge. That subscriber's rationing came without having tried the alternatives they name, so the price they feel is the meter on their own week rather than a comparison.

Change compares this reading with the previous stored reading of the same subject, usually last week’s, and both endpoints stay visible with their dates. Each value carries its n; open it for its full conditions, coverage included. Stored weeks, above, cross eras, which marks a change in how weeks were captured: March era weeks were rebuilt from archives, with live capture from 7 Mar to 31 May, Archive backfill weeks were backfilled from archives (Reddit, Hacker News and arXiv only) and September era weeks were captured live from 16 Sep and filled in from archives.

Posts published 14–20 Sep 2026, as of 2 Oct 2026 04:00Z; in development. People count distinct platform identities and are never added across platforms. Share is Kimi’s posts over all posts AIDRAN captured on that platform in the window. Reddit’s posts include its comments. A normal share is kimi's share of each platform's posts in the 15 earlier stored weeks of the same era (2026-W23, 2026-W24, 2026-W25, 2026-W26, 2026-W27, 2026-W28, 2026-W29, 2026-W30, 2026-W31, 2026-W32, 2026-W33, 2026-W34, 2026-W35, 2026-W36, 2026-W37), per platform. Kimi in each platform’s table
Where Kimi sits among every ranked subject on each platform. The heavy mark is Kimi; every thin mark is another subject.
#14 of 42 on Reddit360 people · Claude 8,811 (#1)
42 ranked subjects, each a tick on Reddit’s own people scale, 0 to 8,811. 43 more subjects aren’t ranked: their people figures are hidden (n 0–19 people, below the threshold of 20), so they aren’t drawn.
#14 of 21 on Bluesky39 people · Claude 895 (#1)
21 ranked subjects, each a tick on Bluesky’s own people scale, 0 to 895. 64 more subjects aren’t ranked: their people figures are hidden (n 0–19 people, below the threshold of 20), so they aren’t drawn.
Not ranked on YouTube: n 0 people, below the threshold of 20 people. Not ranked on Hacker News: n 0 people, below the threshold of 20 people.
Distinct people who posted about each subject on each platform, 14–20 Sep 2026, as of 2 Oct 2026 04:00Z, from release 2026-W38’s summary table (published; every figure coverage-limited). Each strip is on its own scale and nothing is added across platforms: one person can post on several. arXiv, Google News and Exa carry articles, which have no authors, so they have no ranking by people.
