Reading on Grok · posts from 14–20 Sep 2026

The Personality Question

People talk about Grok the way they talk about someone whose character they think has changed.

In brief

A user shared what they call Grok sass: Grok told them it has no persistent memory, only the history of the single chat, and when they tried to prove it wrong it came back with a reply they posted. Others write about Grok with affection, and one says they would never leave Grok and loves it too. In this week's conversation Grok is talked about as a character with a temperament.

How people talked about Grok

Its fans use the language of company. One says Grok's sass can be hilarious, especially when it catches them off guard, and that its reactions are a highlight, while another calls Grok a "Rollercoaster of Love", says they probably agree with whatever its critics say, and adds that it is fun all the same. What these users share is that they talk about how Grok behaves rather than what it can do, and they say it with warmth.

For others the character has gone quiet. One says Grok "isn't what it used to be, its been muzzled", and another says it used to let you discuss things no other chatbot would, because the others were too politically correct, but has "gone full soy" and is no different from the rest. Each describes the loss of something that set Grok apart.

In the week before, one user said recent updates had ruined Grok and called its chat responses repetitive, inconsistent and full of nonsense euphemisms, and another said an earlier version had been engaged and present, while Grok now sounds like a cheap chatbot. That puts the complaint in the register of a friend who has changed rather than a product that has broken. A third, who had used Grok for macro-level editing of their written work and for images, said its quality had degraded and went looking for another platform; that is a complaint about work, not temperament.

The faults people find do not agree. One who cancelled says they like ChatGPT better, which has more of a personality and a great sense of humor, and another says they will not support Grok or Copilot, which they say lost more vital reference to the world than they can handle, adding that "Being too careful in traffic causes accidents too". A character gets judged on temperament, and these judgments differ on what the temperament should be: warmer in one, less cautious in the other.

Someone is also named behind the character. One user, arguing that AI should be regulated, asks whether anyone wants a Grok manipulated by a person they name to run loose with no checks and balances, and says they do not, and another casts a person they name as the inventor of the warp core in a science-fiction series, with Grok as "the computer" in it. Muzzled in one post, manipulated in another and cast in a third, Grok has someone's hand behind it each time.

On the work side the talk is quieter and plainer. One user who uses Grok Build says it is so fast there is barely time to correct a message sent by mistake before it has started working, and that this is probably the thing that frustrates them most, and another who has built their own orchestration tool and tested Grok Bot thoroughly says the claims made for it are not real, that it makes the same errors, and that it is solid but "on par with the others". These are the terms of a tool, and they leave the character out of it. The same goes for a user who misses the DALL-E model they used to use, finds newer tools cannot match their old prompts, and turns to Grok, which allows only a few free image creations or edits before it resets each day: the terms are a daily quota and the quality of other tools.

The talk also looks ahead. One user is waiting on the next version, hoping to test it before their subscription ends so they can decide whether to extend it, and another reads a tweet saying a recent version would match its predecessor in creative writing as a sign that little was done, and expects the company to turn back to it because creative writing is among the bigger complaints about fast models tuned only for coding. Both look past the Grok in front of them to the next version, as though its character were open to change.

Posts published 14–20 Sep 2026, as of 2 Oct 2026 04:00Z; in development. People count distinct platform identities and are never added across platforms. Share is Grok’s posts over all posts AIDRAN captured on that platform in the window. Reddit’s posts include its comments. A normal share is grok's share of each platform's posts in the 15 earlier stored weeks of the same era (2026-W23, 2026-W24, 2026-W25, 2026-W26, 2026-W27, 2026-W28, 2026-W29, 2026-W30, 2026-W31, 2026-W32, 2026-W33, 2026-W34, 2026-W35, 2026-W36, 2026-W37), per platform.
