The Model With a Temperament

People talk about DeepSeek's models the way they talk about a colleague's habits.

In brief

A commenter on a shared DeepSeek run found it funny that the model spent more than half an hour debating a no-op shell edit and "still caught itself," and added that logging such runs makes its "little self-corrections surprisingly useful to inspect." The model's second thoughts are being read as a working record, the way a person might read a colleague's margin notes. A different person said that a Chinese-speaking community calls the model "Big Blue Chubby Fish/Whale" because, in a test of its vision, its reasoning described the DeepSeek logo as "an image of a big blue chubby fish." A nickname taken from how the model described its own logo shows the same habit of treating its thinking as character.

How people talked about DeepSeek

Other accounts are less generous. One person, writing about V4.1 Flash, called it "extremely lazy and won't follow instructions" and said "I can't use it for my purposes, but I'm sure it's great elsewhere." That is a verdict on fit rather than on ability, and it leaves room for other people's uses. Someone else asked whether DeepSeek V4.1 is "still smarter than luna 6?", which is a question about rank. How a model is to work with and where it stands among the others are separate questions.

One commenter argued that "your actual token burn depends heavily on how the model behaves in your specific workflows," and that a model cheaper per token could end up costing more overall if it needs more iterations or keeps asking clarifying questions. In the week of 14 to 20 September, one person said that running Codex on DeepSeek Flash cost very little per hour, a price quoted by the clock where this week's commenter quotes it by the iterations and questions a job takes. A rate can be read off a page once, but behaviour has to be watched across many jobs, and the people best placed to say what a model's habits cost are the ones who have handed it real work. That makes temperament a line item. A buyer is paying for how the model carries itself as well as for what it produces, whether or not the invoice says so.

Identity is another place where people look for a model's character. One person shared just the lines of a chat in which, in their words, "DeepSeek is starting that it is Claude." That is evidence offered in the model's own voice. Another asserted that DeepSeek "was actually serving Anthropic's model as their own," with requests passed through to Anthropic and the inputs and outputs captured. That is a claim about how the model is run, not how it sounds, and it ends in the same question of whose voice a reader hears when DeepSeek answers.

Manner is where opinions pull apart. One person guessed that DeepSeek performs so well because "they deliberately toned down its manner," so that "it comes across like a guy who is never afraid of being lectured by the user." On that view, the manner is part of why it works. Another, surprised that they could ask DeepSeek about scraping the web, wrote that "their moderation needs a lot of work" and advised "not relying on deepseek long term." Where one hears a strength in how the model carries itself, the other hears a gap in how it is policed.

Some of the talk was about how the model is built rather than how it behaves. In a conversation about n-gram embeddings, one person said that "Deepseek Engrams use them more deeply," while a different person pointed to a section of the DeepSeek paper where, they wrote, "they literally deleted unrouted experts from the pool" to fund the embeddings. That is a different kind of attention from reading a model's thinking line by line. DeepSeek Elastic Compute, a sandbox platform for training and evaluating models, was described from the same side. People who watch it work and people who read how it was made are looking at DeepSeek from opposite ends.

Talking about a model as a colleague changes what a failure means. A broken tool is replaced, but a colleague with a temperament is managed, and managing takes someone who has decided what a good habit looks like.

This reading stores no communities for Bluesky.

Posts about DeepSeek by community, 21–27 Sep 2026, as of 2 Oct 2026 04:00Z; in development. Each platform is drawn on its own scale. The word after each community is its type: who is there, not what it’s about (users are people who use one AI product; builders build with AI). A post counts once, in the community it was posted in.

Posts published 21–27 Sep 2026, as of 2 Oct 2026 04:00Z; in development. People count distinct platform identities and are never added across platforms. Share is DeepSeek’s posts over all posts AIDRAN captured on that platform in the window. Reddit’s posts include its comments. A normal share is deepSeek's share of each platform's posts in the 16 earlier stored weeks of the same era (2026-W23, 2026-W24, 2026-W25, 2026-W26, 2026-W27, 2026-W28, 2026-W29, 2026-W30, 2026-W31, 2026-W32, 2026-W33, 2026-W34, 2026-W35, 2026-W36, 2026-W37, 2026-W38), per platform.
