In brief
A DeepSeek chat that handed over a PDF turned out not to have made one at all. A commenter explained why: DeepSeek does not have multimedia capabilities, so it cannot generate a PDF; it reasoned at length about building one byte by byte, then offered a shortcut called "download PDF" that is only a hyperlink doing what printing the page to PDF does. "That PDF you have was generated by your browser, not Deepseek." The scene is small, and it is the week's habit in miniature: people working out what DeepSeek is, what it only appears to be, and what has to be built around it.

How people talked about DeepSeek
The same kind of limit came up from another direction. Another commenter, asking someone about a comparison, wanted to know whether they were using browser rendering loops, DOM inspection and error-correction loops, since DeepSeek does not have native vision capabilities. Both exchanges state what DeepSeek lacks as a plain fact about the model. That is a way of talking about a part, not a finished product: something with edges that you learn and plan around.
Some people meet DeepSeek as a destination. One user praised its writing, the way it kept the smallest details and caught a style, and called the Expert model an amazing tool for working with documents. Someone else posted a workaround for uploading files to Expert Mode with Google Drive links. For these people the app is the product, and its limits show up as obstacles to route around.
In several accounts, though, DeepSeek arrives inside someone else's tool. One person's advice was blunt: DeepSeek with OpenCode is a "Goated combo". Others describe keeping Claude Code and pointing it at DeepSeek's API, one after running into a rate limit on Claude, another because "deepseekv4 api is so affordable". In these accounts the harness is the constant and the model is the part that gets swapped.
Price is the argument that makes the swap thinkable. One post asked whether inference cost has become more important than model capability, saying DeepSeek had just cut V4 Pro's price to a fraction of what it was and calling that a structural shift, from a contest over who has the most powerful model to one over who has the cheapest infrastructure. A commenter made the shift sound less like DeepSeek's doing than a market's: people are selling V4 Pro inference profitably, they said, without subsidy, so the up-front cost does not matter when a third-party API exists.
The price case has a ceiling in the same conversation. One commenter said DeepSeek V4 sounds good but they would reach for a top model, Opus or GPT, for orchestration and keep local models for well-specified work. Someone deep in a long session found that V4 "falls apart hard unless you're gonna pay a lot more per turn", and said they loved Gemma instead. Their accounts give DeepSeek a place in a stack that depends on the job it is handed.
The week before, the question people kept asking was about the model itself. One said it had been very good just after release and then dropped, and hoped V4.1 would be better; another felt V4 Pro does not quite reach open-source frontier level. Compared with the week before, this week's posts turn to what DeepSeek costs, who serves it and where the data goes.
The plainest version of that question came from a newcomer: how are you running DeepSeek V4, through the API or locally? Other commenters showed why it matters, because they disagree about what DeepSeek is. One said nobody can pull the switch down on it, since anybody can run the model, and that the service depends on where you get it. Others said DeepSeek's own hosted version has "a lot of baggage that comes along with it, privacy concerns being among them", and that there is "no bubble popped unless you are running it locally", with a warning to note where your data is going.
Choosing a host is a bet, and one person put it plainly. Someone who had only used DeepSeek through OpenRouter said they would love to use its API but could not tell how much risk it carried, and did not want to get banned on its platform. Behind the bet sits a word people do not agree on. One commenter called DeepSeek open source; another said leading Chinese models like it are "not truly open source" but are open weight and "open-method", with published research papers on how they work. Both are describing a model that anyone can take and run, and that is what turns hosting into the user's decision. Openness hands people a question that a price cut cannot settle: whom to trust with the work.

Change compares this reading with the previous stored reading of the same subject, usually last week’s, and both endpoints stay visible with their dates. Each value carries its n; open it for its full conditions, coverage included. Stored weeks, above, cross eras, which marks a change in how weeks were captured: March era weeks were rebuilt from archives, with live capture from 7 Mar to 31 May, Archive backfill weeks were backfilled from archives (Reddit, Hacker News and arXiv only) and September era weeks were captured live from 16 Sep and filled in from archives.
