Google's $50M Settlement Didn't Settle the Argument About AI Bias

The most consequential thing about Google's $50 million payout is what it doesn't cover. Google settling with Black employees over hiring, pay, and advancement is a legitimate resolution of an internal employment dispute. It is not a resolution of the question of whether AI systems deployed in healthcare, insurance, or lending are producing discriminatory outcomes at scale — and treating it as the latter is precisely how the self-correction narrative stays alive past its expiration date.
